This diagram is the basis of understanding for all heat treatment operations. In general, phase diagrams are constructed at equilibrium (the condition is very slow cooling). The Fe-Fe3C phase equilibrium diagram worksheet is an important tool for understanding the microstructure and properties of carbon steel, a type of ferrous (Fe) and carbon (C) alloy. Carbon dissolves in iron in solid solution form up to 0.05% by weight at room temperature. Steels with dissolved carbon atoms up to this amount have alpha ferrite at room temperature. At a carbon content of more than 0.05%, carbon deposits will form in the form of a hard intermetallic stoichiometric compound (Fe3C) known as cementite or carbide. Apart from the solid solution of alpha-ferrite, which is in equilibrium at room temperature, there are other important phases, namely delta-ferrite and gamma-austenite.

In the Cu – Ag system phase diagram, there are 3 regions consisting of a single-phase, namely α, β, and L phases. The α phase is an area that is rich in copper. This phase is a solid solution that has a silver atom as the solute and has an FCC structure. The β-phase solid solution also has an FCC crystal structure, but with the silver atom as the solvent and the copper atom as the solute. At certain temperatures, the α and β phases can consist of 100% solvent (pure copper or pure silver).
